Land registration

Registration of vehicles, personal property, land and real estate at the land registration office.

The Faroese land register was administered by the Danish Court Administration up until 1 February 2006 when it came under the jurisdiction of the Faroese Ministry of the Interior. It was subsequently taken over by the Environment Agency on 1 June 2007.

The Faroese land register administers:

  • Vehicle registration: The current provisions on vehicle registration came into force on 1 January 2015. Prior to this date, all such registrations were listed as personal property. The vehicle registration system consists of the following categories:
    • Loan papers
    • Cancelled papers
    • Other papers
  • Personal property: This category covers all personal property. Prior to January 2015, all vehicle registrations were included in this category. Personal property is divided into the following categories:
    • Registered personal property
    • Cancelled personal property
  • Real estate: Real estate is divided into the following categories:
    • Title deeds
    • Loan papers
    • Other documents
  • Transcripts regarding real estate
