Hotel overnight stays record high for November

The total number of hotel overnight stays in November 2021 was just under 10,400, which is the highest ever figure for November. Hotel overnight stays saw a year-on-year increase by 23% on November 2020, up by 4% on November 2019.

The total of 10,352 hotel overnight stays in November 2021 is an increase of just over 1,900 on November 2020. Hotel overnight stays are used as a measurement of the number of visitors and the duration of their stays.

The number of overnight stays by Danish residents and Faroese residents was just about equal, with around 4,000. In terms of residents outside the Faroe Islands and Denmark, overnight stays more than doubled compared to November 2020, although they have yet to reach the levels of 2019. The number of overnight stays by Faroese residents was down by 25% on November 2020, yet still topping 2019.

Check-ins

Check-ins show the number of hotel visitors regardless of the duration of their stays. November 2021 saw just under 4,500 hotel check-ins, a slight decrease on 2020.

The growing number of check-ins by residents outside the Faroe Islands and Denmark has more than tripled since November 2020, though it has yet to reach the levels of 2019. The number of Faroese overnight residents is down by just over 25% on November 2020, yet it remains higher than in 2019.

Occupancy rates

The occupancy rate shows the number of available rooms used. Just over 35% of all hotel rooms were occupied in November 2021, compared to 26% in November 2020. The occupancy rate for 2019 was 46%.

The number of hotel rooms increased significantly in 2020 due to the opening of two large hotels and expansions of several others. Therefore, despite the increased number of hotel rooms, the occupancy rate remains lower than in 2019.

Numbers so far this year

The year-to-date figures for overnight stays and check-ins were almost twice as high in 2021 as in the same period in 2020.

Definitions

Overnight stay: in this context, an overnight stay is defined as a single night spent in a hotel which registers and passes this information on to Statistics Faroe Islands. For example, if ten people spend three nights at a hotel, this counts as 30 overnight stays.

Check-in: the number of individuals who check in at a hotel.

Room nights: the number of rooms occupied over a certain period. For example, if ten people spend three nights in five rooms, this counts as 15 room nights.
