19,600 households — up by 2,700 in the past decade

More than half of Faroese households consist of one or two adults and no children.

At the start of this year, 19,600 households were registered in the Faroes. This is an increase of 321 since the start of 2024 and almost 2,700 more than ten years ago. The Faroese population has grown by more than 6,000 people in the past decade.

Single-person homes are the most common household type, comprising 5,300 households or just over a quarter of all households. About 45% of the 2,700 households that have been added in the past ten years are single-person homes. Coming close behind are homes with two adults and no children. On 1 January, this group counted more than 4,900, which amounts to a quarter of the total. These two types thus make up more than half of all households. Almost two-thirds of all households have no children. The average household size is just below three people.

About households

Households are defined as persons listed under the same address in the national register. Household statistics are compiled at the start of each month. The figures cover the entire Faroese population, i.e. the total number of people in households is equal to the total population figure. Adults are defined as 18 years or older.
