Population increased by 816 people in the past year

The population trend is determined by net migration (the difference in the number of immigrants and emigrants) and the excess of births over deaths. The increase in the past year is made up of an excess-of-births figure of 287 and a net migration figure of 529.
Compared to the previous 12-month period, the excess of births over deaths have decreased while net migration has increased, although the growth rate in total remains the same.

The table below shows the population in each municipality on 1 December 2020 and 1 December 2021.
The highest percentage growth during this period was in Tórshavn municipality and Klaksvík municipality. For the first time, Nes municipality saw the third-highest percentage growth, with an increase of 4.8% (66 people). Thus, Nes municipality saw a higher population growth compared to Runavík municipality, despite the population of Nes municipality only amounting to one-third of the population of Runavík municipality.
The biggest percentage decline was in the municipalities of Kvívík, Sandur and Skálavík. The population drop in these municipalities is mainly due to people resettling in other municipalities.
