Fewer room nights, more check-ins

Faroese hotels registered about 20,300 room nights in the first quarter of this year (Q1 2025). This is a 2% year-on-year decrease. The room occupancy rate was 31%, unchanged from Q1 2024. Overnight stays fell by almost 1,000, while the number of check-ins increased by 660.

The first quarter of 2025 saw 30,796 overnight stays in Faroese hotels, 989 fewer (3%) than in Q1 2024.

Despite this drop in overnight stays, there were more check-ins.

More check-ins

A total of 17,472 check-ins were registered in Q1 2025, an increase of 660 (4%) on Q1 2024.

On average, visitors stayed 1.8 nights per check-in, down from 1.9 in Q1 2024.

The number of visitors residing in the Faroes has been on a steady increase since 2022, based on Q1 figures. In Q1 2025, Faroese residents accounted for 12,262 check-ins, a year-on-year increase of 1,127. Check-ins by Danish residents increased by 203, while the number for residents outside of the Faroes and Denmark fell from 3,133 in Q1 2024 to 2,463 in Q1 2025.

Increase in overnight stays outside capital region

Despite the overall decrease in overnight stays, hotels outside of the capital region registered an increase of 778 stays (up 52% year-on-year).

Hotels in the capital region saw a decrease of 1,767 (6%) in overnight stays.

More Faroese visitors, fewer from elsewhere

Grouping overnight stays by country of residence, we see a clear increase in Faroese residents in hotels. This figure went from 15,371 in Q1 2024 to 16,923 in Q1 2025, an increase of 10%. Q3 2024 saw a corresponding 10% drop (see article here) in terms of overnight stays by Faroese residents. 

Some 298 fewer overnight stays were registered by Danish residents, down 4% from Q1 2024. Outside the capital region, the number of Danish residents has almost doubled, going from 319 overnight stays in Q1 2024 to 610 in Q1 2025.

The number of overnight stays by visitors from outside the Faroes and Denmark dropped by 2,243 (24%) year-on-year.

On average, 785 rooms were available per month, which is equivalent to a total of 2,354 for Q3 2024.

Occupancy rate unchanged

Q1 2025 saw 20,326 out of 66,618 available room nights, a decrease of 430 (2%). The occupancy rate of 31% remains the same as in Q1 2024

Definitions

Overnight stays: in this context, an overnight stay is defined as a single night spent in a hotel. For example, if ten people spend three nights at a hotel, this counts as 30 overnight stays.

Check-ins: the number of individuals who check in at a hotel.

Room nights: the number of rooms occupied over a certain period. For example, if ten people spend three nights in five rooms, this counts as 15 room nights.

The occupancy rate shows the percentage of available hotel rooms used.

The capital region covers Tórshavn, Argir and Hoyvík.

Hotels in Suðuroy are not included in these figures.
