Strong year-on-year jump in Q3 hotel stays

Faroese hotels registered 93,742 overnight stays in the third quarter (Q3) of this year – an increase of 13.7% on Q3 2023. The profile of hotel guests' countries of residence is changing.

Hotel overnight stays are used as a measurement of the number of visitors and the duration of their stays. For example, if one person spends three nights or three people spend one night, both cases add up to three overnight stays.

Faroese hotels registered 93,742 overnight stays in Q3, a year-on-year increase of 13.7%. 

August saw the highest monthly number of stays (34,594) so far this year, an increase of 17% on August 2023.

Increase in check-ins

Check-ins show the number of hotel visitors regardless of the duration of their stays. 

A total of 33,076 check-ins were registered in Q3, up 3,363 (11%) on Q3 2023.

The average length of stay per check-in was 2.8 nights in both Q3 2023 and Q3 2024.

The greatest change in check-ins was represented by residents outside of the Faroes and Denmark, with a year-on-year increase of almost 3,170 in Q3. Check-ins by Danish residents rose by 1,470, while the figure for Faroese residents rose by 1,280 in this period.

33% increase outside the capital region

While overnight stays increased across the country in Q3, the highest percentage increase (33%) was registered outside of the capital region.

Fewer locals, more foreigners

Q3 saw a 10% decline in Faroese residents staying in hotels compared with Q3 2023. Meanwhile, non-Faroese and non-Danish residents increased by 27%, while Danish residents rose by 2%.

Three-quarters of rooms occupied

Room nights measure how many and how long rooms are occupied. For example, two rooms occupied for two nights counts as four room nights.

The occupancy rate shows the percentage of available hotel rooms used. 

In Q3 2024, 53,628 out of 72,189 available room nights were registered, equivalent to an occupancy rate of 74%, up from 71% in Q3 2023.

On average, 785 rooms were available per month, which is equivalent to a total of 2,354 for Q3 2024.

Definitions

Overnight stays: in this context, an overnight stay is defined as a single night spent in a hotel. For example, if ten people spend three nights at a hotel, this counts as 30 overnight stays.

Check-ins: the number of individuals who check in at a hotel.

Room nights: the number of rooms occupied over a certain period. For example, if ten people spend three nights in five rooms, this counts as 15 room nights.

The occupancy rate shows the percentage of available hotel rooms used.

The capital region covers Tórshavn, Argir and Hoyvík.

Hotels in Suðuroy are not included in these figures.
