Hotel overnight stays doubled year-on-year in October

As was the case in September, the number of hotel overnight stays in October was almost twice as high as the same period last year. With just over 16,400 overnight stays, October 2021 proved the best October ever for Faroese hotels, up by 88% on October 2020 and by 22% on October 2019.

The 16,433 hotel overnight stays in October 2021 are an increase of almost 7,700 on October 2020. Hotel overnight stays are used as a measurement of the number of visitors and the duration of their stays.

Check-ins

Check-ins show the number of hotel visitors regardless of the duration of their stays. October 2021 saw just over 6,500 hotel check-ins, an increase of 65% on October 2020 and a 23% increase on October 2019.

Occupancy rates

The occupancy rate shows the number of available rooms used. Just over 48% of all hotel rooms were occupied in October 2021, compared with 33% in October 2020. The occupancy rate for 2019 was 62%.

The number of hotel rooms increased significantly last year with the opening of two large hotels and expansions of several others. For this reason, the occupancy rate is now lower than in 2019, despite the increase in overnight stays.
