Land registration: more documents about real estate, fewer about vehicles

Just under 14,000 land registration documents were filed in 2022. This is 1% less than in 2021. Real estate documents, which made up the vast majority, increased by 7%, while there was a 26% decrease in documents relating to vehicles.

There was a steady increase in land registrations in the years leading up to the 2007-2008 financial crisis, peaking in 2008 at about 22,000. After 2008, this number was halved, and the decrease continued down to 9,500 in 2012. The numbers then started rising again, and it has averaged at 12,000 - 14,000 in the past five years.

Land registrations are the public registrations of the relevant state authority’s rights to real estate such as houses and other types of residence, plots and land, easements, vehicles and other personal property.

Registered documents include title deeds, loan papers, marital agreements, easements and personal property deeds.

The Faroese land register was administered by the Danish Court Administration up until 2006 when it came under the jurisdiction of the Faroese Ministry of the Interior. It was subsequently taken over by the Faroese Environment Agency on 1 June 2007.
