Tóra – the most popular name for girls born in 2023
Tóra has become the most popular baby girl name since records began in 1985. Five of the 262 girls born in 2023 were named Tóra. It usually takes more than five instances for a name to top the list of popular baby names.
In joint second on the list were Lív, Lilja, Olivia, Marta, Bjarta, Sólja and Isabella, with three instances of each name. Of these, Lív has been the most consistent over the years, with 121 instances since 1985. Meanwhile, Isabella is a relatively new name, having steadily risen in popularity over the past 15 years.

Although Tóra has not topped the list before, it has been a popular name for many years. Almost every year, one or two baby girls have been named Tóra, and since 1985, a total of 89 girls have been named Tóra. At the end of 2023, 117 Tóras resided in the Faroes.

No less than 25 names tied for third, with two instances each. While some of these names have featured regularly on the list, others are relatively new. Anna, Rakul, Hanna and Eva are common names, while Svala, Nóra, Luna and Rán have only joined the list in the past three years.
Many new baby girl names have been added to the list since 1985. Some of these have become common today, including Ró, Emilia, Ranja, Brá, Vón and Ria. The name Bianka was a newcomer to the list in 2023.
About 70% of the 262 girls born last year were unique for that year. In the past decade, girls have outnumbered boys in terms of unique names on the annual list of baby names.

The above list covers first names of persons residing in the Faroe Islands on 1 January. All names are listed in accordance with the national register. Double first names, e.g. Hans Petur or Anna Maria, are listed as a single name.
